The SMART Rivers Conference is a biennal forum bringing together those involved in river transport form developing and developed countries in the world. IT started as an initiative of major international organizations in the field of Inland Water Transport to promote transport by barge, and the first conference was held in 2005 in Pittsburgh. SMART Rivers is placed under the umbrella of PIANC, the World Association for Waterborne Transport Infrastructure. For this edition, the organisation is entrusted to the PIANC National Section of Argentina.
